Learn how to remove stubborn smells from your Kelso Tumbler with simple steps. This guide covers common causes and effective cleaning methods.
Quick answer
Remove odors from your Kelso Tumbler by washing with baking soda and warm water, or running it through the dishwasher. For persistent smells, try a vinegar soak.
Why odors happen
Odors in tumblers often come from leftover moisture, milk residue, or not drying the lid and spout thoroughly. The Kelso Tumbler's silicone sipper spout can trap particles if not rinsed soon after use.
When to replace instead of clean
If the smell persists after deep cleaning, the silicone may have absorbed the odor permanently. In that case, consider replacing the tumbler or using it for non-flavored water only.
Diagnosis and cleaning steps
- Symptom: Musty or sour smell coming from the tumbler, especially after sitting closed for a few hours.
- Likely cause: Milk, juice, or other sugary drinks left in the tumbler without immediate rinsing. Moisture trapped under the silicone spout valve.
- Corrective action: 1. Rinse the tumbler and lid with hot water. 2. Wash with mild soap and a bottle brush. 3. For odors: fill with 1 tsp baking soda and warm water, let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse. 4. Alternatively, run the tumbler (without the lid) on the top rack of the dishwasher. If the smell remains after these steps, the silicone may need a longer soak in white vinegar (1:3 with water) for up to 30 minutes.
- Stop or choose another option: If the odor does not disappear after a vinegar soak and thorough drying, the material may be permanently affected. Use the tumbler only for water, or replace it.
